Milan To Target Adebayor If They Fail To Sign Dzeko
Thursday, June 25th, 2009

According to ESPN Soccernet, AC Milan will target either Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor or Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano if they fail to sign Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko. AC Milan club administrator Adriano Galliani said,

“We are only looking for a forward, and our aim is Dzeko … He is a Wolfsburg player, and they have a right to keep him - even though he continues to claim that his desire is to come to Milan.”

“From experience, I know it’s difficult to keep a player whose wish is to leave. If we fail to get Dzeko then (Sevilla striker) Luis Fabiano could be an alternative - as could Adebayor.”

Wenger Admits Club Does Not Have Lots Of Funds
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

According to Richard Bailey at Sky Sports News, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted that the club does not have a great amount of funds. He told the club’s official magazine,

“I’m fed up with people who think I have £100million in the bank yet don’t want to spend it … How can people think that? … The pride of the club is having moved to a new stadium while maintaining the team at the top level.”

“We cannot pump £100million into it, so we must keep faith in what we are doing as I believe this team does a lot of things right.”

“It does not need to be transformed. When you go on a long unbeaten run in the league and reach two semi-finals as we did last season, common sense tells you that.”

“The future looks bright. But I want to add to the squad and I have identified one or two targets. However identifying players and buying them are two different things.”

Reporter Reactions To The Signing Of Thomas Vermaelen
Friday, June 19th, 2009

Goal.com has an interesting article in which their reporters discussed their reactions to Arsenal’s signing of 23-year-old Thomas Vermaelen. Here is what they had to say:

“I’m sceptical about this move. The guy was a fine player for Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie, but he never showed any signs of success at a higher level, namely in the Champions League. Even allowing for the fact that he’s a Belgian international, Ajax have done very, very well to get €12m for him.”

– Wout Stravers, Amsterdam correspondent for Goal.com Netherlands

“An underwhelming acquisition for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger. He adds no height advantage to what William Gallas and Kolo Toure already offer, but his versatility may help the Gunners during what could be a gruelling campaign as he is able to deputise for Gael Clichy at left-back despite Kieran Gibbs’ continued development.”

– Alan Dawson for Goal.com International in north London

“Thomas Vermaelen was a good defender for Ajax, but the step from the Eredivisie to Premier League is a huge one. He did a good job regarding man-marking in the Netherlands, but had some problems when he had to play far from his own goal, high up the pitch with a lot of space behind him: a good example in this last season was a 4-1 defeat at Vitesse. In addition, all the players in the Premier League are physically very strong, so I think he will need quite a lot of time to get used to that.

“His advantage is that he’s a versatile player: he can play in the centre of the defence or at left-back. However, I don’t think he will be an immediate big threat to Kolo Toure and William Gallas. Ajax will be happy with the fee they got for him, as it’s quite good for a defender from the Eredivisie. Now he’s the second most expensive Belgian player in history after Marouane Fellaini from Everton, but does he justify it? He’s been good, but not great, for Ajax, so it’s not like when Wesley Sneijder left after his amazing 2006-07 campaign. Instead, he has a lot more to prove, and I’m extremely curious to see how he’ll cope with it.”

– Tommy Vaneldik, chief editor of Goal.com Netherlands

“Another summer in which Arsene Wenger makes noises about experience and ends up going for youth first. As good as his record at spotting young players is, was it really wise to spend such a sum on this position, especially for a player who could - to the pessimist - appear to be the next Philippe Senderos? Time will tell, but if I was an Arsenal fan I would be scratching my head.”

– Ewan Macdonald, Goal.com International chief editor

Geovanni To Stay Unless Ridiculous Offer Received
Friday, June 26th, 2009

According to the Hull Daily Mail, Hull City are going to hold onto Geovanni unless they receive a “ridiculous offer” for him. Hull City boss Phil Brown said,

“Do I see reason why he won’t be a Hull City player next year? Not unless we get a ridiculous offer … Then, like any team, you would have to consider it from a business point of view.”

“If we’re bringing in a number of strikers to bolster the chances to score goals, I know for a fact that Geovanni is a good footballer.”

“He can be as creative as well as playing a big part with the goals that he scored … He was the leading goalscorer last season and unless there were ridiculous bids on the table, then it would be foolish of me to let him go. But the market can be a crazy world so who knows?”

“We’ve spoken to the player, to his agent and to the president of Nancy and were very encouraged … Now we’re awaiting an answer from the player that we’re the favoured club ahead of Celtic.”

Manchester City Have Made Bid For Maicon
Thursday, June 25th, 2009

UPDATE: According to Vince Masiello at Goal.com, Manchester City have made a bid for Inter Milan defender Maicon. His agent Antonio Caliendo told Antenna 3,

“Besides Real Madrid, I rule out that Manchester United are looking for him, but I know that the Citizens did make an approach.”

“However, the man who decides is [Inter] president [Massimo] Moratti. I would be happy if Maicon stayed at Inter to win the Champions League.”

“Moratti says there is a 50 per cent chance of Maicon staying.”

June 23rd, 2009 According to ESPN Soccernet, Inter Milan defender Maicon’s agent that Chelsea could make a move for his client. His agent Antonio Caliendo told Calico Mercato,

“If an attractive offer comes in, well, in this world, everything is bought and everything is sold … I believe Ancelotti is one of Maicon’s biggest admirers.”

“He is open to offers from everyone. (Inter president, Massimo) Moratti is taking the right decision to assess the bids.

“Maicon is happy at Inter, but the transfer window lasts a long time. Something can happen every day, but for now there has been no decision.

“It’s not just Real Madrid but Chelsea who also could make a move (for Maicon). I’m not saying that would be the case because the possibility (of buying the player) is open to every club.”

“However, what I would like to point out is that you don’t negotiate for a champion, you go there, you buy him and that’s that. You need to make a financial effort to buy a champion.”

Lens Interested In Gelson Fernandes
Monday, June 22nd, 2009

UPDATE: According to Alan Nixon at the Daily Mirror, Lens are interested in Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes. City are thought to be looking for £2.5million for Fernandes.

June 4th, 2009 According to Robin Hackett at Setanta Sports, Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes is unhappy with the club. His agent Marcel Schmid said,

“I can really assure you that he is quite unhappy about his situation … We believe that City have spent an awful lot of money on players who are very similar to him and that they will play them because they cost a lot of money – not because they are better.”

“We hope he will go. We will do everything we can to make sure he is not staying … He wants to be playing not for 10 or 12 minutes every time. He wants to play for 90 minutes because that’s the type of player he is … He is the motor of the team – not a 10-minute player.”

When asked if Fernandes received any offers from other clubs, Schmid said,

“What we have is a lot of talk with several clubs in several countries … I don’t really want to go into the names of the clubs. There are half a dozen at least in various countries talking to us now, but it is not at a stage where we can say there is an offer.”

“Clubs are trying to find out behind the scenes whether Gelson will be available or not … First of all, they have to find out if they can afford him. Secondly, we have to see from a sporting point of view whether he is prepared to go there.”

“Glen wants to play regularly in the Champions League, he has got himself back in the England side so I understand that. Sometimes you have to be fair to players.”

“It’s a big year for him with the World Cup coming up,” he added. “Playing Champions League football will make him an even better player than he is today.”

June 16th, 2009 David Prentice at Liverpool Echo and the Portsmouth News are both reporting that a deal has been agreed upon for Glen Johnson. However one is claiming the deal is for £17million while the other is claiming £18.5million.

“I told him I couldn’t do that. Providing the deal is right for Portsmouth and Glen then we will look to try and do something in the right way.”

“It is very hard to try and hold people back when they have a chance to play in the Champions League. I accept that.”

When asked if an offer of between £15million and £18million had been tabled, Storrie said:

“You may not be a million miles away from the mark … I wouldn’t think it would be too long [before a deal is struck].”

“The matter will come to a conclusion at the beginning of next week. I do not have a preference over the move, it is up to Glen … The deals are almost identical so it really is down to him and what club he prefers, which one is going to pay him more money.”

June 16th, 2009 According to ESPN Soccernet, there are reports stating that Liverpool signed Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson for £18million.

June 14th, 2009 According to Sky Sports News, Portsmouth executive chairman Peter Storrie admitted that he will not stand in the way if a big club wants Glen Johnson. He also hinted that somebody tabled an offer for him. Storrie said,

“He [Glen Johnson] said, ‘If one of the big four come in with Champions League football, would you stand in my way?”

Stoke City Rumors: Ashton, Owen
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

According to Sky Sports News, Stoke City are considering going after West Ham United striker Dean Ashton.

According to Martin Spinks at WhyDelilah, Stoke City boss Tony Pulis would like to sign striker Michael Owen. He said,

“You never say never in football, so of course I’d be interested in throwing my hat into the ring if it was ever viable … I’m not sure whether Michael would want to come here right now, but that situation could always change for him.”

“He would be a great signing for this football club and he can rest assured our fans would treat him as one of their own.”

“I imagine there will be bigger clubs taking an interest in his availability for the moment, and I can’t say I’ve received a copy of his dossier, but that doesn’t mean he will end up signing for them necessarily.”

“So it could be a deal that comes on to our radar in time and one we’d be silly to turn our back on if we could get something sorted with his people.”

“He has had his fitness problems and they’ve been well publicised … but if you’ve got a fit Michael Owen then you’ve still got one hell of a player on your hands.”

Griffin Expects To Leave Stoke City
Thursday, June 4th, 2009

According to Michael Baggaley at the Stoke Sentinel, Stoke City captain Andy Griffin expects to leave the club after a “fall-out” with manager Tony Pulis. Griffin said,

“I haven’t started since the game at West Ham, so I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to understand where I stand in the manager’s thoughts.”

“All I can say is I had a fall-out with the manager and, as a result of that, was not in the team. Sometimes I wasn’t travelling and was cutting the grass at 3pm on a Saturday.”

“I have just turned 30, feel as though I was playing well and still believe in my own ability. It is disappointing, but that is what happens when you fall out with the boss.”

“But if and when I go, I will thank the manager for bringing me back home. I suppose it is just a case of waiting to see what happens in the summer. If nothing happens then I will be back in pre-season and will give my all.”

West Ham United Do Not Need To Sell Players
Friday, June 12th, 2009

According to West Ham United’s official website, West Ham United are better off financially and will not need to sell any of its players. Non-Executive Chairman Andrew Bernhardt said,

“The wage bill has been reduced and the settlement agreed with Sheffield United is budgeted for.”

“I can assure fans that Gianfranco absolutely does not have to sell any players for financial reasons and new players will be arriving in the summer to augment what is already a strong playing staff.”

“We totally support his philosophy of following the West Ham tradition of bringing young players through, as well as investing in new talent where appropriate.”

“But we also believe the club should not spend more than it earns and thus increase the debt. It simply isn’t necessary when you have such a talented management team and pool of up-and-coming young players. It seems pointless to invest in West Ham United’s world famous academy if you are then not going to use the players you have nurtured and developed.”

“He has done fantastically well and if we do get big money for him the one thing we will try to do is reinvest it back in the squad and try to make it stronger and better if we can.

“No-one wants to lose their best players but we are realistic here. It is always a problem; it was a problem in January which I tried to fight off before I came to the conclusion I was swimming against the tide.

“We’ve got it again with Antonio but it is what it is, we understand we are Wigan and to make us bigger and better it is what we have to do. I don’t think it affects the rest of the squad. The kid has had an outstanding season and an outstanding season last year.

“He has made himself one of the best right-sided players in the Premier League and with that comes a premium. He is 23 and although there is frustration as a manager you don’t want to lose your top players but sometimes it has to be.”

Everton FC sign Jo on season-long loan deal

Everton FC sign Jo on season-long loan deal

Leon Osman and Jo 460

EVERTON have signed Brazilian striker Jo on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
The
22-year-old spent five months on loan from Eastlands at Goodison Park
last term, and after a week of discussions, the former CSKA Moscow
player - an £18million signing for City last summer - will spend the
next 12 months with the FA Cup finalists.
Everton were hoping
to complete the final paperwork for Jo to play tonight in the club’s
first pre-season friendly of the summer at Bury.
Jo scored
five times in 12 appearances for Everton last season, but his future at
City was put in doubt by the arrival of Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn
last month.
The loan deal was initially agreed last weekend and the player travelled to Scotland with Everton for a training camp this week.
Everton’s
other two summer signings, midfielder Anton Peterlin and defender
Skhodran Mustafi, have both received international clearance to feature
against Bury.
Everton have also confirmed that they will go to
tribunal to agree a compensation package with Leeds for the transfer of
16-year-old Luke Garbutt.
Leeds chairman Ken Bates is annoyed by the player’s departure from Elland Road and will demand “full compensation”.
Everton have held discussions with Leeds and the Premier League following the youngster’s switch to Goodison earlier this month.
Everton insist they have acted within the rules, but Garbutt will not feature for the club until the issue is resolved.
The
Toffees have also been given permission to hold talks with Sheffield
United full-back Kyle Naughton after a £4.5m fee has been agreed
between the clubs.
