LONDON - Penyerang sensasi Manchester United, Wayne Rooney berjanji kepada peminat The Red Devils bahawa dia tidak akan mengikut jejak Cristiano Ronaldo.
Janji tersebut pastinya sesuatu yang amat bermakna bagi peminat
United tatkala bintang England itu meraikan ulang tahunnya yang kelima
di Old Trafford.
Rooney, 23, kini menjadi tonggak paling utama United sejak Ronaldo menyertai Real Madrid awal musim ini.
Setelah meledakkan lima gol buat United musim ini, Rooney menegaskan, dia akan terus menyumbang lebih banyak gol buat The Red Devils.
"Saya selalu katakan bahawa saya sayangkan kelab ini dan selagi saya
diperlukan di sini, saya akan terus bermain di sini. Tiada satu sebab
pun untuk saya meninggalkan kelab ini.
"Saya telah dapat segalanya yang saya mahu. Keluarga saya tinggal
hanya 30 minit dari sini, saya juga selesa di sini dan secara jujurnya
saya sendiri tidak dapat gambaran yang saya akan pergi melainkan
pengurus mahukan saya pergi," kata Rooney.
Untuk rekod, Rooney telah meledakkan 102 gol buat United sejak pengurus, Alex Ferguson membawanya dari Everton pada Ogos 2004.

LONDON - Alex Ferguson yakin Manchester United akan menutup mulut
pengkritiknya dan memenangi kejuaraan Liga Perdana England buat kali
keempat berturut-turut musim ini.
United dilihat semakin lemah tanpa Cristiano Ronaldo dan Carlos
Tevez musim ini dan mula dikritik hebat selepas mempamer prestasi
hambar pada awal saingan termasuk kekalahan 0-1 kepada pendatang baru,
Burnley.
Begitupun, anak buah Ferguson itu sudah mula menemui rentak dan
selepas membelasah Wigan 5-0 dua minggu lepas, mereka sekali lagi
membuktikan kualiti sebenar apabila mencalar rekod tanpa kalah
Tottenham Hotspur dengan kemenangan 3-1 di White Hart Lane kelmarin.
"Saingan musim ini baru bermula dan masih terlalu awal untuk
memperkatakannya, tapi saya rasa kami akan berada pada tahap terbaik,"
kata Ferguson.
"Kami telah katakan sebelum musim ini bahawa kami memiliki pemain
yang hebat dan mereka semakin menunjukkan peningkatan setiap masa.
"Cuba lihat Darren Fletcher sekarang dan cara dia bermain dan kami

Paul Scholes ensured Man United's bid to reach a third successive Champions League final got off on exactly the right note.Sent
off at the weekend at Tottenham for some would say two typical Scholes
tackles, the 34-year-old produced another skill he is well noted for,
ghosting into the penalty area unseen in the 77th minute to nod home
after Hakan Arikan had saved Nani's blistering shot.
Scholes' effort gave United victory they just about deserved in a match of few chances.
It was just the right way to start atoning for that dismal
performance against Barcelona in Rome last May, and it might have been
even more only for substitute Michael Owen to toe-poke a close-range
chance just wide.
Not that United had it all their own way. Ben Foster is proving to
be a reliable performer as Edwin van der Sar's deputy, although he did
have to survive one major scare.
It was one of those moments goalkeepers dread.
Foster set himself to save Serdar Ozkan's shot, only for the ball to flick off Jonny Evans and cannon skywards.
The United keeper could only turn and hope, knowing he was powerless to do anything about it.
Thankfully, the ball dropped just the wrong side of the crossbar for
Besiktas' fans, who cranked up the volume to maximum just before
kick-off and kept it there until half-time.
Not that United were affected. Indeed, they coped in fine style, content to knock the ball around and wait for openings to come.
The problem was, they did not. Adopting an attitude of which Nemanja
Vidic would have approved, the Turks buffeted their opponents when they
had to - as Wayne Rooney and Nani would testify - and always remained
solid.
On his Champions League debut Antonio Valencia got past Ibrahim
Uzulmez on a couple of occasions, without being able to deliver a
decent cross, while a neat back-heel from Nani released Patrice Evra
inside the penalty area.
With Cristiano Ronaldo making a goalscoring bow for Real Madrid in
Europe's elite competition, Evra has been given licence to get forward
far more than in the past.
He skipped onto Nani's well-executed pass with relish and drove a
low cross to the near post. But Michael Carrick was not in the greatest
of positions and turned it meekly wide.
As the giant monitor showed Ronaldo thundering home on of his
trademark free-kicks, it was hard not to think United are still missing
the world player of the year.
How could it be any other way given he has been the star man in a team that has reached successive Champions League finals.
However, as tends to happen with players who are no longer around, their legend can often exceed the reality.
As he delivered his interval team-talk, Ferguson was no doubt
reflecting that United had lacked a cutting edge at times even with
Ronaldo in the team.
And, in a group where away points might end up being at a premium, starting their campaign with one would not be a disaster.
Not that any side managed by Sir Alex Ferguson would simply settle for a draw.
A brilliant cross from Nani caused havoc in the Besiktas area and
when Matteo Ferrari failed to clear, Michael Carrick only needed a good
bounce to threaten.
Unfortunately for the England man, he didn't get it and instead
could only knee the ball goalwards, where it was scooped up by Hakan
Arikan.
As the home side, Besiktas had an obvious incentive to keep pressing
forward and if Paul Scholes had not stepped in to make one of his
well-timed tackles, Ozkan might have been presented with a clear sight
of goal.
Instead, it was Rodrigo Tabata who let fly, although Foster, producing another solid display, made a comfortable save.
The introduction of Dimitar Berbatov and Owen, who was making his
first Champions League appearance for four-and-a-half years, meant the
departures of Carrick and Rooney, who did not look impressed as he
walked off.
Yet, disappointed as he was, Rooney is too much of a team man not to celebrate when United score.
Nani deserved all the credit for a blistering shot that Arikan saved but could not hold.
Not for the first time in his long career, Scholes was on hand to finish off the rebound.

Ferguson drops Scholes hint



Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted Manchester United will offer Paul Scholes the chance to prolong his career with them.The
former England international's deal is due to expire at the end of the
season and the 34-year-old has previously hinted he would hang up his
boots next summer.
Scholes cited poor form and a fresh knee injury as the reasons for
his diminished enthusiasm, although the new season has seen the veteran
playmaker back to his best.
Ferguson acknowledged Scholes' game has changed over the years,
however, he has seen a recent spark in his game that leads him to
believe he can play beyond this season.
"I don't think this is Paul's last season. Not with the way that he
plays. He is not the type to burst in to the penalty box any more is
he?" explained Ferguson.
"It's difficult to say [how long he can go on] because it's still
only September, but I am seeing the fresh Scholesy and the best time to
use Scholes is when he is fresh.
"He will not be playing the whole season, but that's why we have got a squad of players, and he will miss more than he plays.
"But if I get 25 games out of him at the level we saw against Spurs last Saturday, I think we will be delighted with that."

Fergie: They will always be noisy




Manchester United silenced their "noisy neighbour" for a few hours after a 4-3 win over Manchester City.After
a summer investment exceeding £120million and four successive wins to
start their Premier League campaign, City had turned this latest
confrontation between Manchester's old rivals into the most
eagerly-awaited for years.
And the performance more than matched the billing, with United
taking the lead on three occasions, only to present City with an
equaliser before Owen provided a dramatic final twist.
"Sometimes you have a noisy neighbour. You cannot do anything about that. They will always be noisy," declared Ferguson.
"You just have to get on with your life, put your television on and turn it up a bit louder.
"Today the players showed their form. That is the best answer of all."
Despite the remarkable scoreline, Ferguson was in no doubt United deserved their victory.
Shay Given made a series of magnificent second-half saves, denying
Dimitar Berbatov on three occasions, which the United manager felt
would have given the scoreline a more appropriate look.
"We could have had six or seven today," he said.
The United manager did add that United might also have lost thanks to their abysmal defending.
The weaknesses were apparent in the first-half, when the hosts were coasting thanks to Wayne Rooney's second-minute effort.
There was certainly no explanation for Ben Foster's decision to let Joleon Lescott's long ball run into his area.
With Carlos Tevez charging in, Foster eventually took drastic
action, only to get robbed by the Argentinian before he could dive on
it.
Tevez promptly fed Gareth Barry, who swept home leveller number one.
Craig Bellamy then scored twice in response to a Darren Fletcher
double, the last of which came in the final minute, not that long after
the Scot had put United ahead for a third time.
On the latter occasion, Rio Ferdinand was the man to blame,
attempting a casual chip over the City defence which instead went
straight to Barry who set Bellamy off on a 60-yard run which ended in a
goal, with Foster's role again questionable.
"The fact we made those mistakes probably made it the best derby game of all time," he said.
"What would you rather have, a 6-0 win or the greatest derby of all time? I would prefer to win 6-0."
With all the talk centring on Tevez, who hit the post in the final
minute of the first-half, Owen had been totally ignored in the build-up.
In the end though, it was his calmness in front of goal that proved decisive.
"Michael was only on for something like 17 minutes," said Ferguson.
"He was the best man to be on there when the game is going to be in their penalty box. There is no-one better at taking chances.
"His positional play, first touch and finish were absolutely superb. World class."

The build-up to the match had been overshadowed by some verbal jousting between Ferguson and City counterpart Mark Hughes.
Former United striker Carlos Tevez also played for City following

However, after mistakes from Ben Foster and Rio Ferdinand looked
like costing United their chance of victory, Ferguson admitted his side
