topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond

Introduction

Recently, XSR and several other sites
have posted previews of upcoming x38 motherboards, and the MSI Diamond
was no different. Thankfully, we finally have our hands on the finished
article and with some brand new testing equipment, hope to put it
through it's paces. Let's see how it does.
About MSI

"Established
in August 1986, MSI has always upheld the business philosophy
"Award-winning product quality and outstanding customer service." MSI
is a specialist in the design and manufacture of motherboards, add-on
cards, servers/workstations, barebones, communication devices and CE
Products and Notebooks. Surmounting a challenging industry, we've raced
to the head of the pack and are now ranked within the world's top 3
motherboard manufacturers and one of the top 5 server manufacturers.
What's more, MSI graphics card has the most amazing sales performance
over the past years, making it to the no. 1 position in the world for
four consecutive years. Did you know that one MSI graphics card is sold
every 2.8 seconds? So far, there are more than 60 million users
worldwide enjoying MSI graphics cards.
The backbone of
MSI is its fierce dedication to developing cutting-edge products and
technology. Equally important, MSI has integrated a multi-corporate
strategy, consumer insights measure and monitoring, and brand
strategy/management over the years. The best proof of this success can
be proven in year 2005 when MSI Notebook received 4 best performance
awards for exports in Taiwan Innovalue in 2005, making MSI the biggest
winner among all Taiwan companies. Additionally, four of MSI CE
products also received the highest honor Japan G-Mark contest and won
the prestigious German iF design contest."
NB. Information taken from MSI's website.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Bundle

X-FI Xtreme Audio

The X-Fi Extreme
Audio is the cheapest of the X-Fi and misses out on a lot of the
features of it's bigger and more expensive brothers. However, it's an
X-Fi nonetheless so comes with the X-Fi control panel, giving you
access to the Crystalizer and CMSS-3D surround upmixing. Unfortunately
it only allows you to use EAX 4.0 as apposed to the latest 5.0 HD which
will mean the latest games won't sound quite as real as the Extreme
Gamer or the Fatal1ty edition.
One advantage of the
Extreme Audio though, is the fact that it's PCI-e and can slot into
anything from a 1x port to a 16x port. This makes it much easier to
find a place for an add-on audio card in the ever dwindling world of
PCI support. It's sound quality should also be superior to the onboard
Realtek solution.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond2
The board features 4 PCI-E slots which are colour coded blue and yellow
to separate the first and second slots from the 3rd and 4th. Due to the
spacing between the first couple of slots it seems obvious that MSI
envisaged them being used a lot more (or at least used by larger cards)
than the 3rd and 4th

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-4PCIe

Between the 3rd and 4th PCI-e 16x slots is the name of the board, etched in an odd, hand written style.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-name

In the final version of this board, MSI have dropped the DDR2 support
and simply provided 4x DIMM slots for DDR3 modules. Unfortunately the
colour scheme for the slots isn't quite as good looking as the PCI-e
slots shown above. Instead of the rich blue and yellow, they are in a
pastel blue and pink; oh dear.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-DDR3-2

The CPU socket is surrounded on all but one side by capacitors and coolers for the PWM area and Northbridge chip.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-CPU

ust north of this is the CPU 8pin socket. The board comes with a piece
of plastic filling 4 of the 8 slots so that those with 4pin PSUs are in
no doubt as to where to stick it. Those with the 8pin connector can
simply remove the clip and slot in the cable.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-8pin

One nice addition to the board come in the shape of the "Dual Core
Cell" chip found near the bottom of the board. This allows for
automatic overclocking (if you like that sort of thing) under load
while monitoring CPU cores individually.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-DCC

Another is the LED post display. As you boot up it displays exactly
what is going on at that time, be it CPU frequency check, memory
frequency check or SATA device detection. This little thing is
incredibly useful for overclockers as if an OC is unstable during post,
they can see exactly where it failed.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Post

Also, down by the Dual Core Cell chip are a couple of buttons which are
a life saver for reviewers. They are simply on/off and reset buttons,
but damn is it useful to not have to mess around with case power-button
cabling.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-PS

Not only that but on the back of the board, with the 8
USB 2.0 ports, the 2x eSATA ports, 2x Cat.5 connectors, onboard sound
and PS2 ports is a CMOS clear button. This is another great idea as it
stops people having to open their case to reset it. However, its
positioning, although useful, is a little worrying as it's quite common
for me to reach behind my case and plug in or pull cables just by feel.
I doubt it would take me long to accidentally clear my CMOS, which
might only be a minor annoyance to some, but if you have heavily
customized the BIOS settings, this could be very frustrating.

NB. The button is located between the eSATA ports and the 4 huddled USB sockets.
topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Back
Located at the rear of the board is the realtek onboard sound chip
(though it's unlikely this will ever be used thanks to the included
PCI-e X-FI Extreme Audio card)

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Realtek2

Fintek also plays a part in this board, supplying the
Super I/O Chip which is a controller for all the old school technology
onboard.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Fintek

Back at the bottom by the handy switches, are the usual front panel USB and Audio connectors.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-USB

Next to these is a single floppy drive connector.

Moving
up the board a little, we have the SATA ports. There are 4 slots in a
pastel purple colour, and two others in red and black and red which
deal with RAID Next to this is the yellow IDE connector; this seems
aged now, but many still use IDE CD/DVD drives so including one is
necessary.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-SATA

Across
the x38 Diamond, solid capacitors are used. These tend to have a longer
operational life than conventional capacitors; and they look good too.
Oddly, also across the board there are several MOSFETs which seem to
have been twisted out of their original placing. They are quite sturdy
so it would seem they were put on that way. It just seems strange
because they have guide lines underneath them which they don't line up
with at all.

smbungan....

Cooling
One of the more interesting parts of the
x38 Diamond is its cooling system which is quite massive. It "starts"
at the bottom of the board with the IDT chip which is covered by a
basic copper heatsink. This is attached to the southbridge using a
heatpipe which is covered again by a simple copper heatsink; though
this one also sports an aluminium top with an MSI logo.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-SB2

NB. For more information on heatpipes, check out our glossary entry here.
Another
heatpipe then extends from this heatsink to the "Circu-Pipe" cooler
which MSI have been working on for many months. This is designed to
represent a breakthrough in Northbridge cooling technology; let's hope
it's up to the task.
It's made up of heatpipes
surrounded in places by a plentiful amount of copper fins. The reason
for it's name is that one of the heatpipes curves over in a circular
fashion.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Circu-pipe2

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Circu-pipe4

Not
one, not 2, but three heatpipes then break away from this circular
heatsink and finally come to rest at the insides of the PWM heatsink
which has many copper fins and an aluminium shroud on top that features
an a beveled "Circu-Pipe" text.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-PWM2

All
of the cooling for this motherboard is passive; not a fan to be found.
This of course means that the board itself is totally silent. However,
it usually means that temperatures on certain components - most notably
the northbridge and PWM area - are hotter than normal due to the
reduced air circulation. We shall see.
Northbridge, Southbridge, PWM and IDT

Because
we were curious to see what the x38 chip actually looks like we decided
to pop the cooler off and take a look. All the chips were covered in
horrible purple goo that must have resembled heat pads at some point.
Once it was all cleaned off we could get a much better look at them.

The one below is the x38 itself. It's the largest of the heatsink clad chips and is the one that sits beneath the Circu-Pipe.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-X38

The second biggest is the Southbridge which sits under the aluminium shrouded, copper 'sink.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Intel3

The PWM area looks quite dainty once the large copper finned block is removed.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Naked-PWm

NB. The chips under the heatsink are the small ones behind the ones marked "R50".

Finally
we have an IDT chip which takes care of the board's clock frequencies.
This one sits beneath the smallest of the Diamond's cooling solutions.
It's the baby of the family.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-IDT

Installation
Installation of the x38 Diamond board
was relatively easy. The large Circu-Pipe NorthBridge cooler caused no
problems for our ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120 CPU Cooler, but a more
uniformly shaped tower cooler could have problems.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Clearance2

The memory modules had plenty of room to sit snuggly in their slots. No clearance issues with the GPU.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Clearance3

One
thing I noticed when I first powered on the board. This thing lights up
like a damn Christmas tree! Green, blue and red LEDs.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-LED

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-LED3

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-LED4
Then
we have the yellow LEDs from the post screen. It runs through CPU,
DDR3, VGA, ICH, CMOS and BIOS. When you windows boot it displays MSI.

topic MOTHERBOARD MSI-x38-Diamond-Post2

Testing
Motherboard
testing is an inaccurate science. Most comparisons between motherboards
(with the same hardware in them) show very little difference in
performance when moving from one motherboard to another. The real
difference is in several things: features, overclocking, temperatures,
cost. We have run several benchmarks to make sure there is no drastic
performance difference from other boards but we have mainly focused on
the real areas where motherboards differ.
The benchmarks run were as follows: 3Dmark06, Everest memory, Everest latency and HDTach.
The test bench setup used for this review was:
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Motherboard MSI X38 Diamond
RAM Crucial Ballistix 1GB DDR3 12800
HDD Maxtor DiamondMax 20 80GB SATA
Power supply Silverstone Olympian 650W
Graphics card PNY 8800GTS 320mb

topic MOTHERBOARD HDTACH
Overclocking
Overclocking is one of the main tests
for motherboards. What is the max FSB it can boot to windows with and
remain stable? To find this out, I lowered the CPU multiplier to 6 and
stuck the memory divider to 1:1.2 to make sure neither the RAM or CPU
would cause any instability. Then I gradually raised the FSB until it
no longer booted to windows. I then had a play with FSB voltages while
keeping an eye on temperatures. Once I found the max windows bootable
frequency I ran Super Pi 32m to check it's stability; if unstable I
restarted, lowered the frequency and try again.
After
a lengthy testing period I hit a unmovable wall at 470FSB. At this
point the post LED screen said it was the CPU causing the problem so to
test this I lowered the FSB to 450 and raised the multiplier to 7
(making the CPU frequency much higher than 470*6) and attempted to
post. Windows bootable, no problem. At this point I attempted raising
Northbridge voltages, FSB termination voltages, but nothing. I spent a
while longer attempting to beat the 470 barrier, but no dice. I even
adjusted the power option CPUclk settings but that didn't help either.
470FSB
isn't a poor max bus by any means, but having seen other boards hit
over 500 I was expecting more. Although this figure gives enough
headroom for most people, let's hope that this maximum FSB increases
with new BIOS releases.
Cost
The x38 Diamond is going to be sold at around £195 which is the same price the
680i boards went for a few months ago. It seems to have become the
standard for feature full motherboards to cost a couple of hundred
quid. This seems a little crazy, but I suppose if you want the latest
and greatest, you'll have to fork out for it.

Noise and Cooling
Due to all the heatsinks being passive there was no noise from the
motherboard at all. I also took temperatures of each section of the
board by placing a temperature probe firmly against the heatsink above
each chip. This isn't an exact way to measure chip temperatures but it
gives a rough idea.

IDT SouthBridge NorthBridge PWM Area
Idle 31 31 32 33
Load 30 30 31 30

Conclusion
The x38 was designed to be an
overclockers board and although the Diamond does pretty well, it
doesn't overclock quite as well as we hoped. In the future I imagine
MSI will improve the max FSB atainable with BIOS updates and the 470
wall may have even been down to this particular board; others may have
better luck.
When it comes down to it, if you want
the absolute top possible overclock you might want to look elsewhere,
but if you want a motherboard that overclocks well, cools quietly and
effectively and comes with an add-on sound card, you could do a lot
worse than the MSI x38 Diamond.
