Now here's a list of merits and demerits of each 4A-GE.

First Generation 4A-GE (16V AE86/AE82/AE92 88-89/MR2 NA)

* Pros
o Inexpensive as used engines
o TVIS
o Parts availability in aftermarket and cost of upgrading is nominal
o Equipped in most number of cars
o Best fun per dollar
o Spins better than later 16V models
o Takes regular gas (low octane)
o Good race track engine base
o Durable

* Cons
o least powerful (unmodified) 9.4:1 compression
o Not entirely suited for high output applications

Second Generation 4A-GE (16V AE92 90-91)

* Pros
o Higher compression of 10.4:1
o Stronger internals for heavy modifications
o Easily swapped with early model 16V
o Most aftermarket parts shared from first generation 16V
o Simpler non TVIS design
o Good autocross/ street / normal aspiration drag engine base
o Durable

*Cons
o Lacking in supply, currently somewhat costly
o Not a great deal of improvement from original 16V technically

4A-GZE (AW11 SC/ AE92SC/AE101SC)

* Pros
o Highest OEM overall torque output by far.
o Ready for other forced induction / NOS modifications
o Good street / drag engine
o Tire smoking effect dramatic.
o Based on the 16V
o Durable for many modifications

* Cons
o Expensive to transplant
o Erratic under heavy stress and heat
o Excessive driveline and tire wear
o Needs many peripherals specific to this engine
o Tricky install and diagnose
o Tricky to handle in autocross and small track
o 4A-GE's peaky singing character somewhat lost

4A-GE 20 Valve (AE101/AE111)

* Pros
o Great sounding from individual throttle
o Advanced ECU
o VVT makes individual throttle and high-cams drivable
o Quad Throttle gives serious response
o Peak rpm response unequalled
o OEM form an excellent upgrade for older car application.
o Best balance with AE86, though tricky and costly to install
o AE101 version core engine inexpensive and abundant
o Excellent race track /street /autocross engine
o Best balanced internal components

* Cons
o Complex to modify
o Expensive to modify
o Not suited for drag racing as parts are expensive
o Currently limited modification parts available for heavy tune.
